With new and expanded copy abilities, classic Kirby action is deeper than ever: combine abilities with elements such as ice or fire to create new friend abilities! With tons bosses and enemies standing in your way, Kirby has a new bag of tricks. Let me start off by saying that Kirby Star Allies is simply the best game ever made, in existence, and maybe even throughout the entire realm of human consciousness as we know it.
It's even better than those Zelda games that came out on the CDi, if you can believe that.I must be honest though, at first I wasn't going to purchase this title because of the price. I mean, over $400 for a Kirby game!? However, when I saw the price slash at over $70(!!!), I knew this was a deal too good to pass up. I mean, Kirby itself is iconic, a household name for decades, but seeing it at a price like this really let's the customer know they're paying for a quality product whose brand really stands the test of time. I mean, $450 is a paltry price to pay for literally the best twenty hours of your life.I must comment on the shipping as well. For being advertised as a digital download, the two week standard shipping was extremely fast in my opinion, must quicker than if I had ordered a physical product using ground shipping. Plus, with the added benefit of living in an area with high speed, fiber optic based internet and reaching 50mbps download speeds, you can definitely see where a two week shipping and download timeframe would come in handy, even on Nintendo's 3ds servers.
After all, there $450 price tag isn't just for looks; it also pays for some of the speediest shipping I've ever encountered. All in all, I must say again that Kirby Star Allies is the finest human invention ever conceived, and God forbid we as a species ever see something so gracious, so amazing, so breath taking in our meager existence. If I could rate any higher than five stars, I would rate it a million. Thank you God, Buddha, Nintendo, for bestowing something up me only angels have graced before me. Should I die before my prime, I hereby renounce my children from my will, and leave everything to Kirby Star Allies.Thank you.
Hi, I'm a former game journalist, but even though I don't do that professionally anymore, I still have, you know, opinions. One of those opinions is that while I thoroughly enjoy games on Nintendo platforms, there are a lot of them that you have to wade through to get to the good stuff. So many, in fact, that there aren't too many reviews of some of them. With this in mind, I'll be contributing my own reviews and mini-reviews of these games to this subreddit so anyone who's curious can have something more to judge the quality of these games and try to weed out the diamonds from the rough. And just to be clear, I'm not paid by anyone, I'm not making any money off of this. I'm just doing this because I wanna'. Genre: PlatformerPlayers: 1-4 Co-Op (Local).Review:Kirby Star Allies is a family-friendly Platformer in the long-running Kirby series that mostly doesn't stray too far from previous games in the series. The one main difference this time around is the game's new ally feature that allows you to toss a heart at any enemy you can 'inhale' for a copy ability to instead create an AI helper companion, with up to three companions at any time - with additional players being able to control these companions if they join in.This helper mechanic actually does have a pretty noteworthy affect on the gameplay, taking a series that's already pretty easy and making it even easier, which may be good news for younger and more casual players, less so for more seasoned players. However, lowering the difficulty isn't the only thing this mechanic does - it actually makes for some interesting ability-mixing possibilities, allowing players to combine the abilities of these helper characters with each other or with copy abilities to make new, alternate abilities. This ability-combination thing may be familiar to those who played Kirby 64, which did something similar, although there are some subtle differences here. Ultimately, this makes for some delightful discoveries throughout the game, though it's not without its frustrations, as it can mean occasionally replaying a level because getting a secret requires a specific ability or combination of abilities that you passed by earlier. On balance, this is a pretty decent Kirby game, which overall means it's still one of the better games in the genre, although I will also note that this does have the issue I find with many of Kirby's '2.5D' games in that it feels a bit on the clumsy and sluggish side.
It's still fun, but I just definitely feel there's room for improvement.Ah, but there is one thing I haven't mentioned yet - the presentation. Kirby Star Allies is, quite frankly, absolutely gorgeous. Previously I would have said Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was the best looking 2D Platformer on the Switch, but Kirby Star Allies may very well take the title from that game thanks to its beautiful, detailed visuals and wonderful lighting and water effects. This is paired with a lovely orchestral soundtrack that does a decent job remixing the classic Kirby themes. In the end, Kirby Star Allies is a solid Platformer that skews toward younger and more casual players, and is an absolute audiovisual treat. While more skilled players may not find this quite as engaging as they might hope, less skilled players will find it absolutely delightful, and even better if they have others they can share it with. If you're looking for a great kid-friendly co-op game on the Switch, this game should be extremely high on your list of must-haves.tl;dr - Kirby Star Allies is a family-friendly Platformer in the Kirby series that largely stays true to the series' roots, with the main difference being the new 'ally' mechanic that has you making helper characters.
It's an audiovisual treat, and an absolute must-have game for those looking for a great kid-friendly co-op experience on the Switch. However, more skilled players looking for a challenge aren't likely to find it here. Grade: A-.
